Let’s have a quick look at several things to remember about your big day (feel free to add your own!):

• DO ask your future father-in-law for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Sure, it’s a little old fashioned, but it’s polite, customary and you will appreciate being on your new dad’s good side later.

• DON’T just go out and blow a ton of money on a ring just because it’s the biggest one in the store. A big rock may be impressive at first glance, but there can be a wide range of quality – remember the 4 C’s – Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight. Each is important, and it’s a good idea to toss these terms around with your jeweler. Also, keep in mind what your bride’s individual style is. What some women might find beautiful may be seen as gaudy by others.

• DO get something nice and from the heart as a gift for your bride. Whether it’s a bit of jewelry or simply a really sincere note, your future wife will remember the gift for a long time. It really means a lot.

• DON’T let anyone throw a bachelor party for you that you’re not comfortable with. While a night out with the guys certainly has a different vibe to it than a shopping trip with your bride-to-be, keep in mind you’re going to be married, so act accordingly. A designated driver would be a good idea on this night.

• DO make a rundown list of things to do and remember on the big day. Make sure your best man has the ring, make sure you’re completely ready an hour before the ceremony, confirm transportation arrangements to the reception, and don’t forget to make a toast, thank everyone for being there and to dazzle your bride with the first dance.

• DON’T freak out. Everyone who gets married says it goes by much more quickly than they imagined and after it was over, they couldn’t understand why they got so riled up about it. Sure, it’s the biggest day of your life, but getting too anxious can make it one of the most nerve-wracking. Try to relax.

Above all, talk to other men who’ve taken the plunge. You can read all you can about getting married and being a good husband, but there’s nothing like experience as a teacher.
